Recent progress in the design of new materials and modern high-tech structures opened up various possibilities and growing challenges for civil engineers working in the design, analysis or maintenance of engineering structures. Driven by the societal requirements for improving the safety of new engineering structures as well as the economic needs to extend the life-time of existing structures, engineers are forced to apply a diverse set of skills to solve complex problems in predicting structural behavior.
Our master course in "Advanced Mechanics of Materials and Structures" aims to fill the gap between current developments in the theory of materials and the state of the art regarding application in practical structural engineering. Our curriculum covers the key components of today's structural engineering profession, providing a solid background in structural analysis with special emphasis on computational aspects, mechanics of materials at different scales of description, as well as safety and risk assessment issues. We aim at establishing a strong link between theoretical models, their numerical implementation and experimental verification. Our mission is to train students to take leadership roles in identifying emerging issues in these fields and to develop innovative solutions to the engineering challenges of the future.
